Start of Well

One of the most important things to consider at the start of the game is where you are based. Make sure you have good access to resources, and if you don't, then this could be a good time to start over and try to get a better starting position.

Here are a few things to consider when evaluting your starting position in Farlanders.

1. Mineral site access

2. Enough map access to grow - i.e. you are blocked up too mcuh

3. Food access - you'll need good access to food and water

4. Close to a silicon site. Although not needed until later on, if you know there is a silicon site closeby to your base, this would be a good thing.

Keep Farming that Food

Especially early in the game, you'll need to prioritze food farming as this can be an expensive resource to import. So the best way to get food is to create agriculutural rings of 8 greenhouses around some water. This will give you optimal use of the water source and give you a good retrun in food.

There are a few bad consequences to not having food, you will likely be fined by the government and people will leave which is always a bit of a set back. So really make sure you have enough food for your population throughout the game.

Learn to Trade

Using the trading system is an important part of the game, you can make expensive items and sell them. What you make will depend what you have the ability to create based on your level, so look out for stuff that sells for a good price. Early in the game this could be simple things like food and glass. So as well as keeping your population fed, selling excess food is a great way to bring in some extra credits and maybe purchase something you need with it.

Terraform

Another way to get some great profits is to terraform some land on Mars. Plant things such as fungi, bacteria, moss and grass and then sell those plants when they have grown. Each plant type will bring in different revenue. Having a biologist in your specialist picks will help you a lot for things like getting some bacteria growing.
