Hi! I'm new, and are there 6 Pokemon that I should be raising? If so could you list them and there moves? Many thanks.

It all depends on you really. I personally like offence so I get ninetales (get volpex sp? On mt. Pyre) aron (dewfords little cave) anyone of the starters (they're all great, just depends on what type you want) pikachu (you can get that at the safari zone)vileplume(oddish are in alot of places...)and tailow (flying Pokemon that you can get as soon ass you get some poke' balls.) but thats just what I use. If your new to it you might want to play around a bit and find poke'mon you like. The best way to do things is probably to get Pokemon of all types. That way you can beat any chalanger. But thats just my thoughts. Just go with what you think. It's probably the best.

I'd say your starter, a decent dragon type (Flygon) and maybe you could catch Ralts and Evolve it to Gardevoir for a defensive Pokemon to switch out from an offensive Pokemon (Blaziken, Sceptile, etc.) Plus maybe a Skarmory for a steel type and plus it can fly, and you could catch a vulpix to evolve to ninetails if you didn't choose torchic and a wailmer to evolve to wailord if you didn't choose swampert.

A pretty good team for the Elite Four would be:

Absol - Around level 50, bite or crunch are the only two needed ones.
Manectric - Around level 47-50, Thunderbolt/Thunder/Bite/Anything else
Salmence - Dragon Claw around level 52 can kill most of Lance's Dragons
Heracross - Reversal/Endure mainly or Brickbreak, around level 50

Basically anything other than those is optional.

Wpnfire answered:

Alright, so I have literally only ever used Torchic/Combusken/Blaziken whenever I play through this game. This game is far more complicated than people think, just google "EV training" and you'll see what I mean, so I just say to hell with that and just use one Pokémon. Fighting type moves work on most Pokémon, or at least, there are few Pokémon who can resist fighting type moves, and if they do, you can always defeat them with fire attacks. The only problems I have ever had is with the some of the Pokémon the trainers use in the water gym, but most of them are part ice so it's really easy to go in there with the overpowered skyupper-cutting Blaziken and wipe them all out; the psychic gym leaders' Pokémon, which are psychic and rock, makes it really hard to defeat them, and there's also two of them; and this one trainer on victory road that destroys me the first time I always fight her cause she's got a Milotic that will rip Blaziken's *you know* inside out with one hit! The only time I get other Pokémon, is when I need to use an HM, which I would never teach to Blaizken. I just use legendaries for the Elite Four, cause they're all SUPER flexible. Yeah it's cheap, but they ARE level 50 or above when you get them, so why not? Just level Torchic up to 16 the moment you get him, don't ever run from any battles or use any other Pokémon, and you're set. The battles with May can be frustrating, cause if you don't kill Mudkip et al quickly, she'll destroy you with ground AND water attacks. Blaizken really is overpowered though, just look at his moves, scratch, (100% accuracy compared to tackle's 95%), ember, (100% accuracy), then as soon as it evolves it learns double kick, (good against the first gym, and most of the time, I rarely see Combusken have to kick twice), then blaze kick (high critical hit ratio, which is overpowered by itself, but then it has a power level of 85), slash, (once again, high critical hit ratio, and it's a high-powered normal move, making it effective against most enemies), and sky uppercut, (average accuracy, the move itself is pretty sick, and it's power level is really high, AND you can hit flying enemies, which is a neat touch).

Guest answered:

I have raquaza lvl 100: ice beam, fly, surf, hyper beam (I know he has 2 hm's),but he can solo the elite 4 no sweat, beaten them almost 100 times now

I don't use legendaries so...
1. Blaziken - Brick break, flamethrower, blaze kick, sky uppercut
(can substitute for-camerupt- Flamethrower, eruption, earthquake, any move of your choice)
2.Ludicolo-Ice beam, giga drain, surf, toxic
(can substitute for-vaporeon-surf, ice beam, acid armor, toxic)
3.Gardevoir-psychic, calm mind, thunderbolt(hyper beam or shock wave is also fine), shadow ball
4.swellow-aerial ace, fly, double-edge, quick attack/sand-attack
(can substitute with-salamence-dragon claw, fly, flamethrower, a move of your choice)
5.Aggron-Double-edge, rock slide, metal claw(iron tail if you are lucky),iron defense/ice punch
6.Any Pokemon(mine is wobbufet-counter, encore, mirror coat, destiny bond)
Basically you can choose any Pokemon, it is your preference. I gave an alternative for some moves coz some of the TMs are hard to obtain, and there is only one, so I made your life simpler. Cheers.

You have 2 pokes with a weakness to ground
Guest said: 8th Nov 2021 | REPORT
how does ur Metagross have gyro ball isnt that a GEN IV move?
Guest answered:

There's two kinds of effective teams that you can make: a team of many Pokemon types (fire, water, grass etc.) or a much longer explanation of a basic team (one Pokemon with a crazy amount of HP, one 3 sweepers, one tank and one legendary)

I'll be explaning the types since it's simpler to use:

If you're going for a Pokemon "Type team", there are 4 types you should definitely consider having:

Fighting (Strong physical moves that can beat Normal, Ice, Rock, Dark, and Steel types)
Ice (Good special attack moves that can beat common Grass type Pokemon, along with Ground, Flying, and DRAGON... Who can be incredibly powerful if you don't have a Pokemon who can beat them quickly)
Dark(They can easily beat Psychic and Ghost Pokemon while being immune to those kinds of attacks)
Ground(can beat Fire, Electric, Poison, Rock, and Steel Types)

With These three types included, your team will already have covered 14 of the possible 17 Pokemon types. Keep in mind you still have two other Pokemon to cover the other 3(Bug, Water, and Fighting)

The best fighting type Pokemon in Emerald without trading would have to be Heracross and Blaziken. Heracross has an amazing attack stat with good special defense, speed, and HP stats. An OK defense... Not the best, and a horrible special attack (which isn't a problem in this case since the stength of fighting moves are based on attack). Since Heracross is also a bug type, he can learn bug type moves to cover his weakness to Psychic types, just keep him away from Pokemon who know fire moves and DEFINITELY Flying moves. However, Blaziken in my opinion would be the better choice. He's the final evolution of Torchic which means you can obtain him much earlier in the game. He has the same basic Attack stat as heracross, but because it's also a fire type he has amazing special attack as well. Good HP and Speed and decent Defense and Special Defense. He can learn thunderpunch from a Move tutor to cover his weaknesses to flying and water types. He can learn blazekick and sky uppercut, two pretty good moves. Both would make a good choice.

The best Ice type Pokemon or Water types, since water types can leran Ice moves as well(Yes,Kyogre is probably stronger than all of them but I personally find using legendaries cheap because they're overpowered)
Swampert: Has really good stats in all aspects but is really slow. Luckily it's also a ground type, making it immune to Electric attacks. It only has one weakness to Grass, but it will do serious damage to compensate for it's Electric immunity. Has a wide range of attacks to use, including Water, Ground, Ice, Rock, Poison, and Fighting type moves. If Mudkip was your starter, you should definitely keep him on your team.
Tentacruel: Amazing special defense and speed. The good thing about having high Spec.D is that it's weakness to Electric moves isnt as horrible. High speed means attaking first most of the time. Good spec.Attack and HP, OK attack (I don't suggest teaching it physical moves) and bad Defense which isn't good for it's weakness against ground type moves, but it's water moves will take care of that problem easily.
Walrein: It's so underated and unused, I personally think it would be the best choice if Mudkip isn't your starting Pokemon.Has amazing HP stat with really good Defense, Spec.A and Spec.D. Good Attack, and not so good Speed. Speed is it's only downfall, but it's high HP compensates for it. It will usually survive it's first hit from one of it's weaknesses (Grass, Electric, Rock and Fighting). The good thing is that it's ice moves will cover it's weakness to grass and water moves will cover it's weakness to rock. You can even teach it earthquake through the TM to cover it's weakness to fighting, and rest will replenish all that HP.
Wailord: One of the best HP stats in the game... By level 100 it will have over 500HP! It's really good attack and special attack makes it a hard hitter. The problem is that it's not fast at all and has really (and by really I mean REALLY) bad defenses. If you know how to use it, it can be incredibly useful. If you're a novice, I suggest not taking Wailord just yet.
Gyarados: I personally think this Pokemon is overated but I'll mention him because he's favorited by many. Has amazing Attack, Special Defense, and HP stats. Good speed and ok defense... But a bad special attack. The problem is that Gyarados is a water/flying type. Water moves and ice moves (and even dragon moves since it can learn them as well) are all special moves. Special moves require good special attack... Which is something it doesnt have. If you can figure out a way to use it's attack to your advantage go ahead and use it.
Milotic: Great Pokemon who's absolutely gorgeous. However, practically impossible to find in the game. You need to catch a feebas on Route 119 that will only pop up rarely on 6 spots in the water and then evolve it. But, Has amazing HP and both Special stats with the same speed as Gyarados. Harder to obtain but a lot better to use compared to Gyarados, in my opinion at least.

Dark Pokemon... I HIGHLY recommend not using Mightyiena. It's just overall and awful Pokemon.
Sableye: Has no weaknesses because it's a ghost/dark type and has immunity to Normal, Psychic, and Fighting moves. If it's stats were better I wold recommend it, but it's stats are terrible... It would take a really good player to be able to use Sableye to it's full potential.
Sharpedo: I wouldn't recommend taking him if you already have a water type, but it's an incredible pokemon. Its defenses are terrible but because it has high attacks and speed, it becomes very deadly. You can easily get one hit faints with this Pokemon.
Shiftry: Same stats scheme as Sharpedo but a bit more balanced. It has great HP, Attack, Spec.A, and ok speed. It can be a great choice, but it has a 6 weaknesses (on the bright side it has 6 resistances as well).
Crawdaunt: Low HP, Spec.D and Speed stats but outstanding Attack and very good Spec.A and Defense stats. Can be pretty good if trained properly.
Absol: Has the highest Attack stat of all the Dark types in Emerald, with ok speed and ok Special Attack. If it's trained properly it can be incredibly strong, just needs to be Speed EV trained. He also looks the coolest.

Ground Types: SOOOOOOOOOO Many of them but I will narrow them down to 3:
Claydoll: Also a Psychic type. Has amazing Defense and Special defense. It's other stats aren't anything special. Luckily it can also learn rock moves, which will cover two of it's 5 weaknesses (Bug and Ice).
Camerupt: Opposite of Claydoll stat wise (Great Attack and Spec.A)and also a fire type. Can learn very powerful attacks of Fire, Ground and Rock types. Only has two weaknesses. If Torchic wasn't your starter it would be unarguably the next best fire Pokemon (apart from Ninetails).
Flygon: I love Flygon. It has great base stats including amazing attack and speed. It only has two weaknesses (one of them being ice, which is EXTREMELY dangerous since it's also a dragon type) and can learn a wide variety of moves. Teach it a fir move like flamethrower to cover it's ice weakness. There's so many ways you can use Flygon it's incredible. It may be hard to get it because of all the training you'll need to be doing when you start with Trapinch, but it's worth it in the long run.

Now, keep in mind that these Pokemon aren't mandatory to use. The Pokemon chosen were the strongest of their Types but you're more than free to play with your favorites. This leaves us to 2 free Pokemon spots. Depending what you've chosen to be your team with the first 4 will decide which types to use for these two free places.

The two best choices to make with the Pokemon listed above would be:
1) Blaziken, Walrein, Absol/Shiftry, and Flygon.
2) Heracross, Swampert/Tentacruel,Absol/Shiftry, and Camerupt.

Considering 1)... Blaziken w/Thunderpunch, Walrein, either dark type, and Flygon w/Flamethrower would cover all the Pokemon types apart from Fighting and Poison... Unless you tought Flygon a flying move and a ground move, which I DO recommend. If you choose not to do so, I suggest a psychic Pokemon since Fighting and Poison both have a mutual weakness to it... So;Gardevoir, Metagross or Grumpig would be good bets. Your last Pokemon can be whatever you wish. Scyther is a good choice since it's fast and strong, Manectric would also be a good choice for speed and will also be a good choice since you will have a solid Electric back up to cover water and Flying Pokemon if Blaziken ends up fainting.

Considering 2)...Heracross,Swampert/Tentacruel w/Ice Beam, Absol/Shiftry, and Camerupt w/Rock Slide. All Types would be covered with these four. With your two extra slots I would suggest a Dragon type since they have very strong attacks, either Flygon or Salamence would do. The last Pokemon would have to be either a Pokemon with a lot of HP, or a Steel type pokemon. The HP choice would be good to put on and take damage while you can use potions and revives on your injured pokemon. The steel type would be good as well since it has a lot of resistances and not many weaknesses; Skarmory,Magneton,Aggron, and Metagross would be great choices.

HOPE THIS HELPS! I noticed the thread was old but whatever, hopefully this will help someone else who searches for the best team. All the best!

These Pokemon are very good.
Theres a grass type, ground type, flying type, dragon type, water type, fire type, steel type, electric type. So many types. Unless you want legendary Pokemon then these are the best.

I'm running an interesting team compared to people on this forums ideas...

I have blaziken, Kadabra, Aggron, Crobat, Gyrados and Sableye.

I would evolve Kadabra but it's an emulated game on my Android phone :L And I prefer the moveset of Kadabra to Gardevoir. Reason I chose this team is simple.

Blaziken is my favourite starter, any of the fires are. It's Fire/Fighting, so double type advantage. Kadabra because it is Psychic, but can learn almost any other special move required, and it has a stacked Sp. Attack. Aggron, Rock/Steel, it has beast defense and attack, as well as a mad moveset with opportunities to add flavour. Crobat, Poison/Flying, is madgood with a moveset it learns itself, and it's one of the fastest Pokemon created. Sablye because it is Ghost/Dark - enough said. No weaknesses at all, high Attack and Sp. Attack, good moveset will make it hard to top. Gyrados because it is a Water/Flying and doubles as my move whore with Surf and waterfall :L

In my opinion I think all these teams are pretty good , however I would highly recommend using this team:
1.Blaziken- Will annihilate the first and third elite four members, also it can learn some powerful moves such as sky uppercut and blaze kick
2.Lanturn- this Pokemon is highly under rated which is pretty stupid being that this guy has some serious strengths that will be very useful to you, it also can learn some destructive and mixed moves such as thunder/thunderbolt, hydro pump and ice beam.
3.Absol - definetly the one of the powerhouses in my team which can be agreed by many people due to it's high attack stat, it also will make life easier for you as it will crush the second elite four member who is actually pretty tough.
4.Gardevoir- is such a beast Pokemon that has good and balanced stats as well as having a high special attack to boost it's psychic moves. It also can learn pretty beast moves such as thunderbolt and shadow ball which would be useful to take down the champion.
5.Salamence- all I can say is it's a Dragon and it flies ... Jheez this guy will practically destroy the fourth elite four member and maybe the rest of them due to it's high speed and attack with it's incredible moves such as dragon claw, flamethrower.
6.This team is so beast it doesn't need a 6th Pokemon ... LOL just kidding
6. Hariyama - pure strength and can really help you out against the elite four especially the first and third elite four members.

Try to get a Pokemon with sky uppercut as this does double damage to a Pokemon useing fly and sabeleye since he has no weakness. An ice will devastate the dragon user and lantern can shock wallace and his water Pokemon will have trouble. A Pokemon with destiny bond to take out the strongest with ease and finally a speedy Pokemon like ninjask to finish it quickly . I wouldn't use dragons as all the dragons you can catch are mostly flying as well so they are twice as weak to ice witch an elite four uses but wallace's Pokemon can use this too. I would suggest altaria because of it's high defences.

After I Finished The Game about a lot of times already I figure out a perfect balanced team.
If you choose Mudkip
Swampert - Ice Beam, EarthQuake, Surf/Muddy Water, Slash (This is Your Main Sweeper)
Skarmory - Aerial Ace, Whirlwind, Spikes, Steel Wing
(You will use this to counter Pokemon who uses Double Team or anymove that increase ivasion)
Kadabra - You don't need it to evolved Kadabra has a very high sp attack Physic - (really important) Future sight, Recover, Shock Wave
Breloom - Mach Punch, Giga Drain, Toxic, Ice punch|Fire punch|Thunder punch any will do.
Flygon - Sandstorm, Flamethrower, Dragon Claw, HyperBeam ( or you could choose ninetails but I prefer flygon)
Bannete - I know it is a underused Pokemon but trust me it will be useful | ThunderBolt,Shadowball,Faint attack, Double Team

If Torchic
Choose
Lanturn - Thunderbolt, Surf, thunderwave, Ice Beam
If Treeko
Almost the same you can change breloom with Hariyama
With belly drum, revenge, seismic toss, Double team (you can us the belly drum and revenge combo it can one hit any Pokemon)

Make sure to teach slaking ghost ball (found at top of mt. Pyre) and hyper beam (bought from lilycove department store) because his attack is insanely high and they really help out during elite four.

Give Manectric good electric moves like thunderbolt (awarded for helping Watson with new mauville)

Swampert and Walrein need to learn water hm's along the way such as surf, dive, and waterfall.

Altaria just a good Pokemon to have around, dragon types dominate all others including themselves.

I have played Pokemon Emerald, and the team that worked for me was this:

Sceptile

Moves:

Leaf Blade
Giga Drain
Solar Beam
False Swipe

Manetric

Moves:

Thunder
Secret Power
Crunch
Thunder Fang

Hariyama

Moves:

Vital Throw
Brick Break
Strength
Dynamic Punch

Camerupt

Moves:

Earthquake
Flamethrower
Rock Slide
Eruption

Altaria

Moves:

Fly
Dragonbreath
Aerial Ace
Dragon Claw

Walrein

Moves:

Surf
Blizzard
Ice Fang
Hydro Pump

This team is really good, and worked really well for me against all the gyms and the Elite Four.

1st Gym:

Treecko demolished Roxane's team.

2nd Gym:

Swablu demolished Brawly's team.

3rd Gym:

Numel demolished Wattson's team.

4th Gym:

I couldn't get Spheal just yet so I used Hariyama and Grovyle, and they easily took out her team.

5th Gym:

Norman's team is normal type so I used strategy, to beat his team.

6th Gym:

Manetric demolished Winona's team.

7th Gym:

It's a double battle so used Manetric and Hariyama to demolish Tate and Lisa's team.

8th Gym:

Manetric and Sceptile demolished Juan's team.

Elite Four:

Sidney:

Hariyama

Phobe:

Manetric

Glacia:

Manetric, Sceptile, Camerupt

Drake:

Altaria, Manetric, Walrein, Sceptile, Hariyama

Champion Wallace:

Sceptile, Manetric,, and Camerupt

My suggestions for a great team throughout emerald and to beat the elite 4 is honestly really simple.

1. Swampert(starter) about Lv. 55-60 with hydro pump ( can only be learned as a mudkip Lv. 42) ice beam earthquake and surf

2.Flygon about Lv. 55 to be safe with flamethrower earthquake dragon claw and fly

3.Manectric- Lv 54 it will be usefull with the champion. Thunder thunderbolt( thunder isn't ways reliable) crunch and quick attack

4. Crobat- catch around Lv 7-9 to evolve with friendship Lv. 30-34 or so. Train to around 52 or so Fly steel wing poison fang or sludge bomb and confuse ray or shdow ball

5. Cradily- Lv 55 with giga drain sludge bomb ancient power ingrain

6. Dusclops- Lv.53 shadow ball shadow punch psychic
ice beam

The ones above are just some of my preferations.

The ones below I have used in the elite 4 and have been part of my full time team.

These are also great Pokemon to use that provide excellent help.

Gardivor Blaziken (starter) Sceptile (starter)

Garydos Salamence Rayquaza

One of the 3 Regis Starmie. Camerupt

Ninetails. Scarmory Altaria.

OK, So I started with Sceptile , although he is probably the weakest out of the the three starters but I like him anyway. I quickly picked up a Marill before fighting the first gym. He quickly gains levels and has a fairly strong attack pool.As soon as he evolves in Azumaril l he is a tank, although I am considering capturing a Wailmer and evoving it because everyone knows that Wailord has a surplus of hp that can easily help stall in battle. Anyway for the time being (I've only defeated 6 gyms) I used the move blizzard on him so he can pick off flying, grass, and dragon types. I also gave him surf because, well he's a water type. I picked up a Zubat as soon as I found one and by level 26 I had a Crobat. Now, Crobat is a hugely underrated Pokemon that most people overlook as a flying type. He not only is impervious to poison, but he has the "inner focus" ability which prevents him from flinching. I taught him bite, wing attack, air cutter, and fly. He is affective against grass, ghost, and psychic. He is extremely fast, he rarely strikes second and he take a lot of hits. I am currently training a Slugma in attempt to raise a Macargo, but I strongly believe that Camperupt is the better choice. As for electric types, I use Manectric , he has some strong attacks and is very quick. I also have a Hariyama who is my HM slave. So to sum it up my team consists of:

Sceptile

Azumarill /Wailord
Crobat
Macargo / Camperupt
Hariyama

I used to beat the Elite Four with Rayquaza but now with this team I didn't need it. If they're all around level 60-70 you'll get there Smile Also the reason why I didn't take Rayquaza this time is because I played it on Android so to get on top of the Sky Pillar is impossible ;_;

Why would you need four water pokemon? I would switch Lombre to Shiftry for example, then you could get STAB to Dark attacks and kill off Psychics and Ghosts. The other option would be Breloom to get a fighting type as well. Then I'd change Pelipper to some other flying pokemon, Skarmory, Salamence, Altaria or Crobat. Then depending on what you want instead of Spheal and the extra pokemon you could get two Ice/Electric/Fire/Fight Pokemon: Heracross, Raichu, Manectric, Magneton, Ninetales or Glalie.

My team for you: Kirlia (Gardevoir), Swampert, Nuzleaf, Altaria (with Ice Beam and Flamethrower), Manectric/Raichu/Magneton and Heracross.
Guest answered:

I just demolished Emerald with ease using the following team:

Blaziken: Bulk up, Flamethrower, Overheat, Brick Break (You could use sky uppercut, I don't like the accuracy though)
Gardevoir: Calm Mind, Hypnosis, Dream eater, Psychic
Crobat: Sludge Bomb, Fly, Shadow Ball, Steel Wing
Flygon: Earthquake, Dragon Claw, Crunch, Solar Beam (I wanted a rock move but couldn't get rock slide in Emerald and Rock Tomb sucks)
Walrein: Surf, Ice Beam, Waterfall, Dive (I would have used Rest/Sleep Talk but you don't need them in-game that much)
Magneton: Thunderbolt, Thundershock/Spark, Screech, Hyper Beam

I chose Blaziken as a starter because even though Swampert is better, there are only a few decent fire choices in Emerald. Furthermore there are loads of strong ground and water Pokemon, so I decided to choose those. Blaziken also has STAB-Brick Break, which comes in handy since you don't need a specialized fighter. Gardevoir was chosen because it's awesome, and you get it in the beginning of the game. It's my only single-type Pokemon but whatever, psychic can be used against almost anything with few weaknesses. Crobat is a dominant Pokemon with awesome speed and attack, sludge bomb can kill almost anything and shadowball (along with Flygon's Crunch) can defeat those pesky ghosts. I chose Magneton because of it's resistance and high Sp.Atk. It's not the strongest but I needed an electric Pokemon to get rid of those water and flying types out there and the other options were worse. Flygon can pretty much kill everything with Dragon Claw and Earthquake while Solar Beam is there for Swampert and Whiscash. Walrein is a defensive powerhouse and it's STAB-Ice Beam can OHKO those Dragon/Flying Pokemon in the Elite Four.

There were other options as well (Aggron, Heracross, Skarmory, Salamence to name a few) but I chose these based on my starter. I also caught all of the Regis and Rayquaza (Without a master ball and with a lvl 50 team btw) before the E4 but legendaries are for pussies. Using this team I never even came close to whiting out and defeated the E4 without a single Pokemon fainting. Of course I grinded them to lvl 56-60 before I defeated them but still I think it's a good team overall.

I used this team 13 times

SWAMPERT - Surf (HM), Ice Beam (TM13), Earthquake (Lvl 52) and either Dive (HM) or Waterfall (HM)
Aggron - Earthquake (TM26), Dragon Claw (TM02), Metal Claw (Lvl 13) and Rock Tomb (TM39)
Tropius - Magical Leaf (Lvl 31), Fly (HM), Solar Beam (Lvl 41 / TM 22) and Sunny Day (TM11)
Magcargo - Flamethrower (Lvl 36), Yawn (Lvl 1), Rock Slide (Lvl 48) and Strength (HM)
MAYBE Rayquaza - I would recomend the moves that he has when you get him

REASONING - Sunny Day on tropius cos when it's sunny solar beam only uses one move so you can literally thrash the elite four. Two rock types because magcargo brings strong moves in to help aggron with his lack of rock type moves.

Thats the team I'm going to use but I don't know of a sixth Pokemon and electric types are useless later on I think.

Wow, Great Team Bro! Ill Try To Use It!
Guest answered:

Keep them balanced between types so that whenever there's a type disadvantage, you'll have another pokemon. And never take two Pokemon who share primary types. Oh, and take my advice and organise your boxes, make a box for each type, and organise them. And remember to NOT only raise six Pokemon, raise more of different types so that when all your Pokemon are weak against a type, you can lose, switch Pokemon, and try again.
My team :
Altaria (evolve swablu) : Fly – Dragon Breath – Refresh – Take down
Aggron (evolve aron twice) : Rock Smash – Cut – Iron Tail – Headbutt
Manectric (evolve electrike) : Bite – Thunder Wave – Thunderbolt – Spark
Swampert (evolve mudkip twice) : Focus Punch – Mud Sport – Water Gun – Surf
Delcatty (evolve skitty) : Return – Shock Wave – Assist – Strength
Wobbuffet (evolve wynaut. And for wynaut, make a skitty breed with wailord.) : Safeguard – Destiny Bond – Mirror Coat – Counter
And so far, I'm doing good.

All starters are pretty solid but you can get some troubles with the 3th gym if treecko is chosen and some troubles with blaziken at gym 7
A strong Pokemon is gardevoir you can catch ralts real early in the game
Also you can consider breloom which has real high attack so get rid of his grass moves and only use fight and normal
As a water type you can catch lotad
With flying type your best of catching doduo in the safari zone
And also I suggest catching trapinch as flygon is pretty powerful in gen 3

Have Pokemon that have these types to cover all 17 types of enemy pokemons weaknesses:
Fighting - for beating up tanks such as rock and steel types as well as bulky normal types.
Dark - Psychic Attack immunity (psychic types have op sp. Attack, so being immune to them is best) and counter for ghosts
Ice - Dragon killing as well as for ground and grass types.
Ground - for venom resistance and rock and steel types
Fire - For beating Ice ans bug types with low sp.def
Electric - Bird slaying and water zapping (not to mention they only have one weakness which is ground so focus on not having a dual type electric Pokemon)
I would suggest having these Pokemon:
Shiftry
Glalie
Hariyama
Swampert
Ninetales
Manectric

My team in Pokemon Emerald:

★Swampert: I chose Mudkip as my starter because the champion in Emerald is Wallace (Water-type user). Swampert is a really strong Pokemon. It has great amount of HP and defense, with decent attack start.
Moves: Surf, Waterfall, Earthquake and Ice Beam.

★Gardevoir: The best psychic type in the game, if you can't get an Alakazam. Really good Spl.Atk and speed, found early in the game (Route 102).
Moves: Secret Power, Psychic, Hypnosis and Dream Eater.

★Mightyena: Mightyena might not seem to be a good addition to the team, but I assure you, Mightyena comes really handy, especially in second E4 battle (Phoebe, the Ghost-type user). It has really good attack and speed stats, and is available early in the game (probably the first wild Pokemon you encounter).
Moves: Bite, Crunch, Rock Smash and Strength

★Manectric: Manectric is a really strong electric type. It has really good speed and Spl.Atk stats. You can find an Electrike before Mauville City.
Moves: Bite, Quick Attack, Thunderbolt and Thunder.

★Ninetales: Ninetales is a decent fire type Pokemon with good Spl.Def, Spl.Atk and Speed stats. You can find a Vulpix at Mt.Pyre. When you catch it, it might already have Flamethrower, Fire Spin, Confuse Ray and Quick Attack.
Moves: Flamethrower, Overheat, Grudge, Confuse Ray.

★Flygon: Flygon is a decent Dragon type, with good Speed and Attack stats. You can get a Trapinch on Route 115.
Moves: DragonBreath, Fly, Crunch and Earthquake.

PS.
★ You can catch a Houndour at the Safari Zone, near Lilycove City.
★ If you want to choose Torchic or Treecko as your starter, you can catch Corphish as your water type.
★ You can get a Bagon in Meteor Falls. Salemence, being a psuedo-legendary, will be a great addition to the team.
